For providing LPG connection to women whose households are categorized to be below the poverty line, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana on May 1, 2016. The scheme is operated by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Objective
With a budgetary allocation of Rs. 800 billion, under this scheme, the government aims to distribute over 50 million LPG connections to such women. Because predominant cooking-based fossil fuels are associated with serious health hazards and severe air pollution, the distribution of LPG ensures global coverage of LPG in India. Besides eliminating drudgery and health issues, this scheme also aims to avail employment opportunities to rural youth and women in the supply chain of LPG.
Benefits
Along with 50 million LPG connections throughout India, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana also provides economic support of Rs. 1600, which includes a cylinder, pressure regulator, booklet, and safety house, to each family, interest-free loan for procuring stove and refill by oil marketing companies. Moreover, based on a respective field situation, the cylinders of various sizes, 5–14 kg will be distributed. Owing to this scheme, in 2019, there has been an increase in LPG consumption by 56% as compared with that in 2014.
Who will be benefited?
Any adult woman coming from a family that belongs to below the poverty line is eligible for this scheme. Additionally, the following categories are covered under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
- Those listed in the Socio-Economic and Caste Census 2011 list
- SC/ST households registered under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and Antyoday Anna Yojana
- Forest dwellers
- Those listed as the most backward classes
- Tea and ex-tea garden tribes
- Those residing in islands and river islands

प्रधानमंत्री उज्ज्वला योजना
जिन महिलाओं के परिवारों को गरीबी रेखा से नीचे रहने के लिए वर्गीकृत किया गया है, उन्हें एलपीजी कनेक्शन प्रदान करने के लिए, प्रधान मंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने 1 मई 2016 को प्रधान मंत्री उज्ज्वला योजना शुरू की। यह योजना पेट्रोलियम और प्राकृतिक गैस मंत्रालय द्वारा संचालित है।

पूरे भारत में 50 मिलियन एलपीजी कनेक्शन के साथ, प्रधान मंत्री उज्ज्वला योजना १६०० रुपये की आर्थिक सहायता भी प्रदान करती है, जिसमें एक सिलेंडर, प्रेशर रेगुलेटर, बुकलेट और सेफ्टी हाउस शामिल हैं, प्रत्येक परिवार को, तेल विपणन कंपनियों द्वारा स्टोव और रिफिल खरीदने के लिए ब्याज मुक्त ऋण। इसके अलावा, एक संबंधित क्षेत्र की स्थिति के आधार पर, विभिन्न आकारों के सिलेंडर, 5–14 किलोग्राम वितरित किए जाएंगे। इस योजना के कारण, 2019 में, 2014 की तुलना में एलपीजी की खपत में 56% की वृद्धि हुई है।
